Laundrie remains missing after disappearing days after returning home with out his fiancé Gabby Petito from the couple’s cross country trip.
Her body was found in a Wyoming national park on September 19.
North Port police spokesperson Josh Taylor told CNN’s Randi Kaye that cops were surveilling Laundrie as best as they could legally before he vanished.
At the time there was no warrant for his arrest and Gabby’s body had not been found.
He has since been declared a person of interest by police as they investigate the circumstances behind Gabby’s death.
And the FBI has since issued a warrant for his arrest after they say he “knowingly and with intent to defraud” used a bank card that was later revealed to be Petito’s.
Laundrie has been missing since September 13.
He was reported as missing by his parents Chris and Roberta on September 17. They originally told cops they had last seen their son on September 14.
It later transpired Laundrie had been missing since September 13 after his parents gave the incorrect date for when he allegedly disappeared into the Carlton Reserve.
Laundrie lawyer Steven Bertolino told WFLA: “The Laundries were basing the date Brian left on their recollection of certain events.”
Petito and Laundrie were in the middle of a four-month-long trip across America when Laundrie returned to his parents’ Florida home alone on September 1, driving the couple’s 2012 white Ford Transit van.
Gabby was reported missing by her parents on September 11, and her body was later discovered in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming.
Laundrie has not been named as a suspect.
Following Laundrie’s disappearance, authorities focused their search on an area of Florida swampland.
Detectives continue to scour the Carlton Reserve while Dog the Bounty Hunter investigates the Fort de Soto campground.
It’s reported that the Laundrie family stayed at the campsite on September 6 – days after he returned to the state.
There have also been a series of alleged sightings of Brian in parts of Florida, Mexico, Canada, and along the Appalachian Trail.
Most potential leads have led to dead ends.
