WE all want our home to feel cosy and welcoming, but it’s important that it looks good too.
But with interior trends coming and going every couple of years, how do you know if your home is bang on trend or if it screams old fashioned?
Interior designer Zoe Warren has revealed the most “tacky” home decor trends[/caption]Luckily, interior designer Zoe Warren, who works with PriceYourJob.co.uk, has revealed what she thinks are the most “tacky” home decor trend.
So if you’re still hanging on to any of these once-cool trends, perhaps it’s time for an update.
Ah yes, the good old “live, laugh, love” motto has kept us going for quite some time.
Word art in the home has got to go, according to Zoe who thinks it’s “tacky”[/caption]But according to Zoe, any posters, frames or other decore that are adorned with words or similar phrases are “tacky”.
“Word art is a trend that has been around for years – you won’t be stuck for wood motif options at home décor stores,” Zoe said.
“However, generic plaques reading ‘Home’ placed around your rooms lacks character and looks tacky. “
Instead, Zoe said to take the time to choose something which fits with your décor and overall aesthetic of the room.
The neutral-toned hue was a hit in the 80s and 90s with the walls in every home splashed with a coat or two.
But, it seems, that’s were it should stay as the colour is now seriously outdated, and “scandi white or cool grey” is the hot new trend if you want a “neutral yet clean finish.”
Zoe said: “In the 80s and 90s magnolia paint, named after the vanilla petals of the same name plant, could be found on almost every wall in every home.
“The ‘buttery’ yet neutral blend could be matched with almost every piece of furniture, hence the popularity. However, this colour is now seen as very outdated.”
You might not give much thought to your blinds, but if you have the vertical kind then you better switch them up quick.
“They lack style and character,” Zoe said. “The plastic beaded chains which tie the strips together makes the blinds look unattractive.
“Make the switch to horizontal roman blinds or delicate curtains for an elegant look.”
While we’re on the topic of windows, it’s time to ditch the heavy drapes as well which look so “bulky and formal.”
Instead, Zoe said to choose something which goes “with the feel of the entire home” adding that “a modern home is all about brightness and elegance.”
“Hang the curtain rods higher than your natural window edge to give the illusion that your windows are floor to ceiling and your room is airy,” she added.
Nautical themed rooms should be avoided, according to Zoe[/caption]“Seashells, anchors and navy/white stripes should all be avoided in your home,” Zoe reckons.
“If you intend on bringing the summer vibes inside, you can do so in a subtle way.”
She said to choose a light colour palette which is inspired by your favourite hot country and pair with tassel accessories such as throw cushions.
“The décor is better welcomed when the effort is in the detail.”
In line with a summery theme, wicker furniture tends to “reflect a beach theme, like linen sofas”, Zoe said.
“In the home, they can look tacky due to the texture. The look suits outdoor settings much better than indoors.
“If you are a big wicker fan, rattan is a popular new trend which gives a stylish nod to this outdated classic.”
Last year’s box sold out in less than 48 hours, so what are you waiting for?
It’s safe to assume that we all know someone who has some potpourri freshening up their homes – afterall, it has been around since the 19th century.
While several bowls of the scented petals scattered around the home used to be the norm, it’s now considered “outdated and unapplealing.”
The focus has now shifted to reed diffusers and air misters Zoe said.
