Detectives investigating her disappearance have arrested two people in Kent and inquiries are ongoing.
Met Police commissioner Dame Cressida said human remains have been found in a woodland area near Ashford, Kent.
However, detectives have not yet been able to confirm the identity of the remains.
Dame Cressida confirmed officers searching an area near Ashford had “found, very sadly, what appears to be human remains”.
She added: “Sarah’s disappearance in these awful and wicked circumstances is every family’s worst nightmare.
“I know Londoners will want to know that it is thankfully incredibly rare for a woman to be abducted from our streets.
“But I completely understand that despite this, women in London and the wider public – particularly those in the area where Sarah went missing – will be worried and may well be feeling scared.”
Sarah has not been seen since Wednesday, March 3, 2021.
She vanished after she left a friend’s house in Leathwaite Road in Clapham at about 9pm.
She headed through a back gate on to the A205 South Circular before she is believed to have walked across Clapham Common.
The marketing manager had spoken to her partner on the phone for about 15 minutes, and has not been heard from since that point, according to her friend Rose Woollard.
Cops said it is not clear if she made it back to her home in nearby Brixton.
Police said she was last seen on CCTV at around 9.30pm on Poynder’s Road heading in the direction of Tulse Hill.
Specialist officers and volunteers from London Search and Rescue carried out searches in the area of Clapham Common and the walking route between Clapham and Brixton.
Detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command, which deal with homicides and major crime for the force, have now taken over the investigation.
Officers are asking people in the following areas to check doorbell or dashcam footage for any sightings of Sarah:
A serving Metropolitan Police officer was arrested in connection with the disappearance of Sarah on Tuesday, March 9, 2021.
The police officer was arrested at an address in Kent and he remains in custody, police said.
Assistant Commissioner Nick Ephgrave said: “The arrest this evening is a serious and significant development.
“We will continue to work with all speed on this investigation but the fact that the arrested man is a serving Metropolitan Police officer is both shocking and deeply disturbing.

The Met said a woman had also been arrested at the same location on suspicion of assisting an offender and also remains in custody at a London police station.
The Directorate of Professional Standards is aware and Sarah’s family has been kept updated of these developments, police said.
Sarah’s boyfriend Josh Lowth, whose LinkedIn says he is Marketing Director at MA Exhibitions, spoke to Sarah on the phone for around 15 minutes before she vanished.
Josh, 33, from Brixton, appealed for information on Facebook.
He wrote: “Sarah is still missing. Please share this post to help us to find her. Today, more than ever, we miss our strong, beautiful friend.”
A relative said Josh is “very worried”.
He told MailOnline: “Josh and Sarah have been very happy together and she’s a lovely girl.
“The whole family is obviously very worried about her and just wants her home safely.
“We’re all pulling together and praying that this awful situation is quickly resolved. We want to thank the media for all their help.”

Dad-of-four Nick, of Coventry, said: “She would never have taken a lift with a stranger.
“She was sensible. She didn’t know him and she wouldn’t have voluntarily got into a car. I’m trying to work out what has happened.
“I don’t know that area but I keep looking at a map of Clapham Common to see which route she took.
“I’ve got to talk to my brother. This is the worst news. I want to find out all about this man. He’s got two children for God’s sake.”
Her family also released a desperate appeal for information on Saturday, March 6, 2021.
Her family said in a statement: “With every day that goes by we are getting more worried about Sarah.
“She is always in regular contact with us and with her friends and it is totally out of character for her to disappear like this.
“We long to see her and want nothing more than for her to be found safe and well.
“We are so grateful to the police and all our friends for all they are doing.
“We are desperate for news and if anyone knows anything about what has happened to her, we would urge you to please come forward and speak to the police.
“No piece of information is too insignificant.”

Her Aunt, Jane Everard, of Bolton, Lancs, told The Sun: “We’re devastated. It is so out of character for her.
“She has a very big circle of friends from Durham, where she was at university and down in London. It has been a real shock. We are all so worried.”
Her uncle Doug added: “She is lovely, a really lovely young lady, very sensible.
“The police are keeping my brother informed and we are on the end of a phone.
“It is a really tough time. They are devastated and they are desperate to find out anything they can. None of us really know anything.
“They have always been a very very close family. Sarah, her parents and her sister and brother, they are all in touch on a regular basis.”
