DEAR DEIDRE: I AM so shy that I can barely make eye contact with people.
I have always been timid and the past year hasn’t helped. There is little reason to see others so I get out even less often.
I’m a guy of 32 and fed up with being like this. It’s ruining my life.
One night I was mugged for my phone while returning from the shops. This pushed up my anxiety levels even more. I have regular flashbacks and struggle to sleep.
I don’t want to be like this for the rest of my life. I would like to meet someone to share my life with – but I don’t see how I can at the moment.
And I would love some advice on how I can overcome these problems.
My team and I are working safely from home but we are here to help you as always.

DEIDRE SAYS: If you are shy, eye contact can push you outside your comfort zone. But it is a social skill that helps build trust. My support pack Shyness & Social Anxiety could help.
Speak to your doctor, too. It can be a trait of autism or Asperger syndrome and a diagnosis could help you access specialist support.
Any kind of traumatic life event can trigger PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), causing flashbacks, stress and anxiety to become a common factor of everyday life.
You can get in touch with Mind (mind.org.uk), which helps those suffering from PTSD.
