ALDI’s Christmas cheese board has been crowned the best value for money compared to other supermarket platters.
Consumer group Which? took a closer look at the price of the festive grub to find out which supermarket offers the cheapest cheese.
It calculated how much the diary selections cost per 100g in order to make it fairer to compare than total costs, as each board contains different amounts of cheese.
Aldi came top with its 430g emporium Christmas cheese selection, which costs £3.69 and works out to be just 86p per 100g.
The board comes with some cheesy classics including brie, cheddar, red Leicester, stilton and Wensleydale with cranberry.
It was 39p cheaper per 100g than the most expensive option from Morrisons, which works out at £1.25 per 100g.
But it’s worth noting that the weight of the Morrisons Festive Cheeseboard includes the wooden board that it’s served on, making it heavier than the others in the comparison.
The next most expensive option was from Waitrose, which cost 1p cheaper than the option from Morrisons and it didn’t include a wooden board.
At £7, Waitrose’s cheeseboard favourites (565g) is expensive total cost too and works out to be £1.24 per 100g.
The second cheapest option was Tesco’s 5 cheese selection which costs £5 overall and has the same five cheeses as Aldi.
Compared to Aldi, you’ll have to fork out £2.31 upfront but Tesco’s board is heavier at 500g. It works out to £1 per 100g, which is 14p more than Aldi.
Sainsbury’s favourite cheese collection comes in third with all the same cheeses as Aldi and Tesco but it costs £5 for 456g.
This works out at £1.10 per 100g so you do not get nearly as good a deal on the five cheeses.
In fourth and fifth place are Asda’s classic cheeseboard (450g) for £5 and M&S’s cheeseboard favourites (350g) for £6 via Ocado.
Both selections come with the same five cheeses – brie, cheddar, red Leicester, Stilton, Wensleydale with cranberry – but they cost £1.11 and £1.13 per 100g respectively.
Before you part with your cash, you may find that it’s less expensive per 100g to buy the cheeses individually.
We looked up how much individual packets cost at Aldi and found that you can buy around 1.22kg of the same five cheeses for just £6.75.
This works out to be around 55p per 100g so while you have to pay more upfront, you will get more for your money if you buy them separately.
It’s also important to bear in mind the individual cheese portions in the sets are likely to be different compared to if you bought them separately.
Natalie Hitchins, Which? Head of Home Products and Services, said: “Our research shows that cheddar, brie and stilton are the most popular fixtures on the festive cheese board, and the good news is we found a wide selection of options that contain all three for a fiver or less.
“If you’re happy with your cheese board containing mostly brie and cheddar – and don’t mind having a chunk of Red Leicester as well – these pre-packaged supermarket selections could be for you.
“But if you’re a Stilton superfan or have more exotic tastes, you could be better off assembling your own.”
Morrisons has disputed the findings from Which? pointing out that it’s cheapest cheeseboard costs £4 down from £4.50 and is available to buy in stores and online.
The Sun checked online and found that it was out of stock. You may be able to find it in your nearest Morrisons supermarket.
The Sun has also contacted Waitrose for comment.
