CANDACE Owens called Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez a “spoiled rotten brat” after the congresswoman ranted about Republicans criticizing her for having worked as a waitress.
The conservative pundit, who claimed she used to serve as a waitress herself, told Ocasio-Cortez to “get on a plane and see the rest of the world” in a bizarre attempt to pick a fight with the socialist Democrat.
“I used to be a waitress and I worked multiple doubles. I am laughing out loud at how much of a coastal elitist you have to be to view that as the definition of a hard day at work. Please get on a plane and see the rest of the world (or country) you spoiled rotten brat,” Owens tweeted on Saturday.
Owens continued her tirade against the progressive “Squad” member by seemingly mocking those who work in the food industry, tweeting: “And then he sent his French fries back THREE times! Republicans could NEVER handle that.”
When another Twitter user challenged Owens on “putting down the hard-working service people across the country,” Owens appeared to laugh it off.
“LMAO. I did work YEARS in their shoes. I waitressed since I was 17. I’m speaking from experience,” Owens responded.
“It’s long work, it’s tiring work, it’s respectable work— but it’s privileged work compared to what most others endure across this country and in the world.”
Owens’ attack on Ocasio-Cortez, often referred to by her initials AOC, comes after the congresswoman went on her own rant about the criticism that she has received for having previously worked as a waitress before beginning her work in politics.
“Republicans like to make fun of the fact that I used to be a waitress, but we all know if they ever had to do a double they’d be the ones found crying in the walk-in fridge halfway through their first shift [because] someone yelled at them for bringing seltzer when they wanted sparkling,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted on Thursday.
Congressman Paul Mitchell quoted her tweet and called comments by Ocasio-Cortez “ridiculous stereotyping,” further setting off his congressional colleague.
“This comment is ridiculous stereotyping. I delivered newspapers year-round on foot or on my bike for several years. Worked numerous doubles in Respiratory Therapy where a mistake could result in death. Worked nearly full time to pay for college. What do I not understand?” Mitchell tweeted on Friday.
Mitchell, a Republican from Michigan, had an estimated net worth of $179.6million in 2018, according to the nonpartisan and nonprofit research group OpenSecrets.
“My comments were directed at Republicans who mock my history in service work. That includes President Trump, who you’ve stood by and defended through such attacks, by the way,” Ocasio-Cortez responded to Mitchell on Friday.
She continued: “But if that boorishness doesn’t apply to you, then why feel the rush to defend yourself?”
Later on Friday night, 31-year-old Ocasio-Cortez continued her rampage against Republicans with a series of tweets that indirectly appeared to attack Mitchell, 64, for his age. The tweets never mentioned his name or tagged his account, however.
“These Republicans who are defensively rage-tweeting ‘But you’re wrong! I worked my way to pay through college!!’ don’t realize they sound like folks who speak of the days when Hershey bars were 5¢ at the general store,” she tweeted.
Ocasio-Cortez noted that college costs “have exploded over the last 10-20 years” while wages have not kept up.
“It’s a totally different landscape and the fact they’re using anecdotal experience from 20+ years ago to reinforce their opinions instead of looking at current cost/wage data is disturbing,” she tweeted.
The Democrat was also blasted for selling $58 “tax the rich” shirts on her website, with Republicans – including commentator Ben Shapiro – claiming “only the rich can afford this idiotic sweatshirt.”
Republicans claimed that the high price of the merchandise contradicted her political and economic policies.
Politicians, including Donald Trump, often sell merchandise including shirts or hats as a means of fundraising for their campaigns or causes – hence the high sticker prices.
Ocasio-Cortez defended the cost of her shirts, noting that proceeds from the shirts being used to fund “grassroots organizing.”
“Republicans are freaking out [because] we don’t use slave-wage labor for merch that funds grassroots organizing,” she tweeted.
“But what’s the difference between Trump’s merch and ours? Ours is made in the US. (& for GOP who joke that we should give [t-shirts] for free, we actually do – just volunteer).”
Ocasio-Cortez also recently faced criticism for apparent contradictions to her economic views when she posed for photos in the December issue of Vanity Fair while wearing designer outfits worth about $14,000.
The politician quickly pointed out that borrowing outfits for magazine photoshoots is normal and standard.
In a tweet replying to Fox News anchor Laura Ingraham, she wrote: “I don’t know if you’ve been in a photoshoot Laura, but you don’t keep the clothes.”
