DEAR DEIDRE: MY daughter has just told me that my granddaughter, who is 13, wants to be a boy.
I’m speechless and worried about all the implications.
My daughter is 33 and is arranging for her to have psychological counselling but I am so worried for her and the future.
I am 54 and live alone after my divorce so I have no one I can really talk to.
It’s not the sort of thing you can share with friends.
My team and I are working safely from home but we are here to help you as always.
Send an email to problems@deardeidre.org.

DEIDRE SAYS: There is nothing shameful about it so why not talk it over with an understanding friend, and you can talk to FFLAG, who help families of trans people as well as gay and lesbian (fflag.org.uk, 0300 688 0368).
It’s good that your grand-daughter has told her mum and is now going to get support.
The best way you can help is by telling her that nothing will stop you loving her (or them or him, whatever she decides).
