HOUSE Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin say there could be a deal for a new stimulus relief package before the October recess.
In an interview with CNN’s State of the Union on Sunday, Pelosi revealed that she believes there is “a chance to get something done.”
If a deal is agreed upon and the House passes it by October 2, for instance, Americans could potentially get the second stimulus check as early as October 12.
Last week, Mnuchin said he and Pelosi plan to “continue to have discussions” and have worked some things out regarding the stimulus package.
“When I have a conversation with the administration it is in good faith,” Pelosi said. “I trust Secretary Mnuchin to represent something that can reach a solution and I believe we can come to an agreement.”
Last Thursday, Pelosi reportedly called on Democratic leaders to assemble a new coronavirus stimulus bill.
The bill will hopefully “include stimulus checks, aid for airlines, small businesses, cities and states, as well as rental assistance, unemployment assistance and funds for election security and the U.S. Postal Service.”
Pelosi also predicted the legislation could reach a vote on the House floor regardless of a bipartisan deal being reached on coronavirus relief.
She said the new bill would cost $2.4trillion.
White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows told reporters last month that Pelosi asking for a $2.2trillion bill isn’t “a negotiation.”
The projected cost is less than the $3.4trillion Heroes Act passed by the House of Representatives in May.
“We have a chance to get something done and we want to – what we will be putting forth is a proffer to say: Now, let us negotiate within a time frame and a dollar amount to get the job done to put money in people’s pockets, to honor our heroes and to crush the virus,” Pelosi said.
If a deal is agreed upon and the House passes it by October 2, for instance, Americans could potentially get the second stimulus check as early as October 12.
