Police say they were called to The Drake Hotel in Oak Brook last Friday at 10pm and found little Luca unresponsive with sever head trauma.
First responders said when they arrived they found an emergency room doctor who was also attending the wedding performing CPR on the little tot.
Authorities say Luca was at the wedding reception with his parents when he climbed onto a table that was behind a sofa in an open area where other children were playing.
When the other kids got up to leave, Luca, who was laying on the table top, began sliding off the granite slab.
That’s when the little boy started grasping for the table to hold onto as he slid off the top, according to video the police reviewed of the incident.
When Luca slipped off the table, it toppled over onto him, hitting him in the head and leaving severe head trauma to the poor child.
Moments later, his desperate parents found him unresponsive, called over the emergency doctor and then dialed 911.
Luca was transported to Elmhurst Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead from a traumatic head injury.
Luca’s obituary stated he “passed away suddenly” and is survived by his parents, Simone and Anna, and his older brother, Rocco.
The Drake Hotel released a statement regarding the incident.
“Our team is heartbroken about this terrible accident,” the hotel said. “We wish to share our condolences with the family and friends affected. To respect their privacy, we aren’t able to share the specifics of the incident.”
A GoFundMe was also created to cover medical and funeral expenses for little Luca.
“No words can explain what it feels to loose [sic] a child,” the GoFundMe read. “My condolences to the Berlingerio Family. We are asking all our fellow UPS brothers and friends to assist Simone and his family during this tragedy. We know times are hard but anything will help.”
