All three are said to be in a serious but stable condition.
Kingston-born Johnson played 12 top-flight games for Bolton in the early 2000s, and also made 73 appearances for Jamaica between 2001 and 2014.
Police investigating the shooting believe it is related to an ongoing feud in the area, reports suggest.
The trio were sitting in a group when a car allegedly drove up and opened fire.
Johnson, 40, currently plays for Tivoli Gardens in the Red Stripe Premier League in his homeland.
He made his debut for Bolton in the 2001-02 season, but went on to start just ten games and came off the bench in another nine.
Johnson then spent two further spells on loan at Oldham before moving to Bradford on a permanent deal in 2006.
The following year, the winger joined the Sheffield Wednesday – where he spent seven years and became a fan favourite.
He played 231 league games for Sheffield Wednesday in total, scoring 25 goals and helping them secure promotion to the Championship in 2012.
Responding to news of the shooting, the club tweeted: “Following reports of an incident in Jamaica involving ex-Owl Jermaine Johnson, Sheffield Wednesday’s thoughts are with JJ and wishing our former player a speedy recovery”.
Johnson made his Jamaica national team debut in 2001.
