THE Boys actor Antony Starr has spoken out about the “whacky and kooky” season two plotline he initially believed had gone “too far”.
The New Zealander, who plays Homelander, told of his initial reaction to scripts for the Amazon Prime Video drama, which saw him board and man a speedboat which plunges into a whale.
In the episode trailer set in an alternate universe, the huge sea mammal – with a man mounted on his fin – can be seen riding alongside the vessel as Homelander and the rest of the Boys head to shore.
The character has to make a quick decision and, despite those on board screaming “what are you doing?” Homelander opts to pummel the boat right into the whale.
He grimaces and grips tight to the steering wheel as he aims the angular bow to specifically pierce its side.
Then ensues a gruesome medley of squeals, screams, flying bodies and lots of blood as the mammal moans and slowly dies.

Yet, after re-assessing, he surmised to the website: “When you see a big sequence like that, it’s still anchored in the needs of character.
“The story is still being driven by the character’s needs. The Boys are trying to get away and The Deep is trying to get back into the Seven.
“So, whilst, yeah, it’s pretty whacky and kooky, it is anchored in very strong character needs and story.”

Antony told the same publication: “The only words that Eric [Kripke, header writer] said to me about season 3 were ‘homicidal maniac.’
“Homelander is a homicidal maniac anyway, so I’m not sure what that means.”
Meanwhile, the show boss has vowed “the worst thing that could happen to every character” to brace fans for a gory next instalment.
