A WOMAN has revealed how she transformed her 10-year-old kitchen for £100 in just eight days.
Deepa Gaikward from Leicester said she was desperate to ditch her outdated kitchen for a new one but professional quotes were over £4000.
The nurse decided to take on the huge DIY project herself and saved thousands of pounds.
She purchased the budget essentials from Wilkinson’s, B&Q and EBay and spent just eight days working in the kitchen.
Deepa shared the finished transformation to Facebook, writing: “Well after being in this group and seeing how you guys did renovations yourself…
“I dared myself to do my kitchen renovation for my very first project! My kitchen cabinets were old and had started to peel.
“DAY 1 :Peeling the top laminated cupboards door and scrubbing in and out with sugar soap.
“DAY 2 and DAY 3 :Sanding lightly and painting cabinets Furniture paint English sage from Wilko
“DAY 4: Glass of wine and chilled
“DAY 5 and DAY 6: Painting inside the cabinets and shelves and Drawers
“DAY 7 : NEEDED A REST DAY
“DAY 8 : Backsplash cleaning and sanding.
“DAY 9: Painting Backsplash tiles B and Q all surface Ivory paint.
“DAY 10 : Black grout restorer on the kitchen floor, countertop with D C Fix vinyl and fixing the knobs from ebay. Total cost £110. Was quoted £4000 for a New Kitchen.”
The post instantly raked up nearly 2,500 likes and hundreds of comments with fellow DIYers praising Deepa’s efforts.
Deepa said she decided to take on the DIY herself after realising she was really keen to have a new, modern kitchen but wasn’t prepared to pay out the hefty thousands for professionals to do it.
She challenged herself to update the kitchen without breaking the bank and used tips and inspiration she saw on Facebook to teach herself the basics.
She said: “Initially the kitchen was oak laminated and the lamination was peeling off, and bubbling so I just decided to remove all the lamination and paint the cupboards myself.
‘Then instead of replacing the countertop I decided to cover it with vinyl D.C fix. This was a much cheaper way to renovate my kitchen!
‘I then replaced the handles to make all the cupboards look as if they were new.’
She bought four tins of Wilkinson’s paint in English Sage for £40 and she spent £32 on tile paint from B&Q.
Deepa also picked up bargains online – purchasing D.C Fix vinyl for £20, getting a deal on the black grout restorer pen 2 for £8 and buying brushes, rollers and white spirit for £10.
In total the nurse spent £110 and had all the essentials needed to transform her kitchen.
After painting the splash tiles with B&Q tile paint, Deepa got to work on scrubbing the floor before using black grout restorer to brighten it.
She said: “I was over the moon with the transformation and was amazed that I now have this new and brighter kitchen.
“I am absolutely in love with my finished result and it made my kitchen look brand new!
“I decided to share it on social media as that was where I initially got my ideas from and then spent TWO days replying to people who messaged me and were asking for advice.”
Deepa said the project has given her more confidence and she now feels like nothing is impossible or too difficult to do.
She said lockdown gave her the spare time to be able to do it and she is thrilled to see so many talented people on social media completing DIY projects and saving huge amounts of money.
