BLM activist Patrick Hutchinson won widespread praise after a viral image later showed him with the man, who was white, hoisted over his shoulder and carrying him through a crowd to safety.
Hutchinson, a martial artist and personal trainer, later said he decided to act because he feared the man’s life was in danger.
The weekend saw clashes between Black Lives Matter supporters, people protesting the desecration of statues and monuments, and riot police.
The unrest comes after weeks of anti-racism demonstrations following the death of African-American man George Floyd during an arrest in Minneapolis last month.
Witnesses reportedly said the incident captured in the photos broke out after a counter-protester shouted “F*ck Black Lives Matter”.
Other pictures showed the man surrounded by BLM activists and in a heated exchange.
He is later seen no longer on his feet and at the centre of a dense crowd.
The man is yet to be identified.
Speaking later about the incident, Hutchinson said: “It’s not black versus white. It’s everyone versus the racists.
“His life was under threat so I just scooped him up on to my shoulders and started marching towards the police with him.
“It was scary. But you don’t think about it at the time, you do what you’ve got to do.”
He added that similar action at the arrest of George Floyd could have prevented his death.
“If the other three police officers that were standing around when George Floyd was murdered had thought about intervening and stopping their colleague from doing what he was doing, George would be alive today,” he said.
