A PEDESTRIAN has been killed while walking to shops after a suspected banned driver lost control of his car during a police chase.
The victim was reportedly catapulted into a garden during the fatal incident in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, at around 5.30pm last night.
Photographs taken at the scene show the silver car overturned and completely destroyed.
A marked BMW X5 patrol car was in pursuit of a silver vehicle Peugeot 307 at 5.18pm yesterday in East Ardsley, near Wakefield, West Yorkshire, and signalled for the driver to pull over.
When the motorist failed to do so a police pursuit began, until a short time later the Peugeot hit a pedestrian and overturned, police said.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct is now investigating the accident and the driver has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
According to witnesses, police arrested the 22-year-old man not realising he had hit a person.
Only when a distressed householder came out to tell officers there was a dead body in their garden, did police officers realise the full horror of the crash, reports say.
The scene on Leeds Road in Lofthouse Gate has been cordoned off for a forensic examination.
Road closures remain in place while cops are looking for witnesses at the scene.
The Yorkshire Air Ambulance Service attended the scene but was not required, it has been reported.
A distraught relative of the dead man, thought to be his mother, was soon on the scene and told by-standers that the victim had just popped out to the shops.
A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson stated: “At 5:18pm police officers in a marked roads policing vehicle signalled for a Peugeot 307 to stop in East Ardsley (near Leeds).
“The vehicle failed to stop and a pursuit began.
“A short time later the Peugeot and a male pedestrian on Leeds Road, Outwood were in collision.
“The male pedestrian died as a result at the scene. The driver of the vehicle suffered what are believed to be minor injuries.
“A 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
“Leeds Road is currently closed in Wakefield from Canal Lane to Broad Meadows as enquiries into the incident remain ongoing.
“Any witnesses to the incident are asked to call police on 101 quoting log 1253 of Tuesday, June 9.
“Due to the nature of the incident a mandatory referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.”
