FRIENDS is set to return for an hour-long special episode – but David Schwimmer refused to confirm the news on the Virgin Radio Breakfast Show yesterday.
The actor chatted to Chris Evans about his new Sky comedy series, Intelligence, just hours before Deadline reported the Friends star will be paid £3 million for appearing in an upcoming special.
David joined the cast of Intelligence as a power-hungry NSA agent relocated to the UK alongside Nick Mohammed as an inept tech analyst.
He told Chris: “There are moments that we get to kind of go off script together and just play these guys …
“I came on board as Nick and I had met on another project and had a great time kind of improvising together, I thought. I still think he’s a comic genius.
“He just e-mailed me this idea and I was like, that’s really original and really funny and let’s do it.”
It comes as HBO Max and Warner Bros struck a deal to revive Friends for an unscripted episode.
David, 53, will reunite with Jennifer Aniston, 50, Courteney Cox, 55, Lisa Kudrow, 56, Matt LeBlanc, 52, and Matthew Perry, 50.
It has been reported that an agreement has been reached “in principle” with streaming platform HBO Max, the six actors and the series’ producers at Warner Bros.
The news arrived two days after Perry whipped fans into a frenzy after cryptically tweeting: “Big news coming…”
It gave fresh hope that the much loved sitcom’s stars will soon reunite for a special project years after the last episode aired.
He also joined Instagram, and Lisa, Jennifer, and Courteney all offered their support on the post with Jennifer making a Chandler joke, commenting: “Yay Matty! Could you TAKE any longer?”
Courteney commented: “Yes Matty!!”
Matthew clocked up 3.3million followers in under a few hours of joining the site.
Last month HBO Max, the station that would air the special, revealed that the project is “still a maybe.”
Chief content officer Kevin Reilly said: “There’s interest all the way around, and yet we can’t seem to quite get that interest all aligned to push the button on it.”
Excitement has been building for the special since all six of the main co-stars got onboard with the idea last year.
