A CRUISE ship that docked in New Jersey this morning had more than two dozen Chinese nationals aboard who were screened for the coronavirus.
The Royal Caribbean Anthem of the Seas ship docked in Bayonne, just 10 miles outside of New York City.
Four passengers aboard the ship were transported to University Hospital in Newark and at least two of them were taken out on stretchers, NBC News reported.
Of the other Chinese nationals, 23 were screened after getting off the ship.
None of them showed signs or symptoms of illness and planned to fly back to China from Newark Liberty International Airport today.
The ship left Bayonne on January 27, per the news outlet, which reported one passenger who suffered a fever was given Tylenol and was doing OK.
That person was among the four who were taken to the hospital for further observation.
Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis told NBC News he was told none of the 27 travelers are from Wuhan, the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak.
He tweeted: “I am certain that the NJ DoH, CDC, and PA NY/NJ are prepared and equipped to address any concerns this morning.”
Davis said he was advised the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention considered this a “below low risk” situation and said all other passengers have been released with “no action needed.”
Royal Caribbean said in a statement this morning they are “participating in elevated levels of guest screening.”
“We are closely monitoring developments regarding coronavirus and have rigorous medical protocols in place onboard our ships,” the company said in a statement, per the New York Post.
Passengers aboard the ship told WABC they “were not notified” about the coronavirus scare “and had a lovely trip.”
One passenger, however, said “she wishes she had known.”
On Wednesday, the 12th case of coronavirus was confirmed in the U.S. as 636 people have died in China.
The virus was confirmed in Madison by state health officials in someone who traveled to China within the past two weeks.
The patient showed up at a hospital with flu-like symptoms, but wasn’t admitted, and remains on “home isolation.”
The state’s Department of Health Services said: “The immediate health risk to the general public for contracting this virus is low.”
They added the patient has been “doing well.”
In total, 12 cases have been confirmed, including one in Massachusetts, two in Illinois, one in Washington state and one in Arizona.
The new procedures ban foreign nationals who’ve traveled to China within the last two weeks from entering the U.S.
Citizens who’ve visited the Hubei province that’s considered the virus’ epicenter are set to be quarantined.
This is to ensure “they’re provided proper medical care and health screening,” according to Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said.
The World Health Organization declared the outbreak a global health emergency last week.
The virus — believed to have originated in bats — has so far infected more than 31,400 people globally and killed nearly 700.
