DOCTOR Who will conclude later this month with a two-part finale of explosive proportions.
The BBC sci-fi saga is set to pit Jodie Whittaker against an entire army of Cybermen in a story arc that show boss Chris Chbinall called “the most epic space opera story we’ve done.”
Joining everyone’s favourite Time Lord will be Game of Thrones actor Ian McElhinney, who played Daenerys Targaryen’s (Emilia Clarke) mentor Barristan Selmy on the HBO drama.
He said of the new role: “I very much enjoyed my time on Doctor Who.
“The team were a delight to work with and everyone was very supportive and welcoming. All in all, it was a blast.”
The title of the finale episodes suggests that the biggest riddle of the series will finally be solved.
Episode nine is titled Ascension of the Cybermen, while the follow-up episode 10 is called The Timeless Children.
Ascension of the Cybermen speaks for itself, given Chibnall’s comments about the androids assembling a battalion.
What’s more, when Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) returned to the show, he warned The Doctor to “beware the lone Cyberman,” hinting that a single scout would assembly a deadly troop.
As for The Timeless Children, this is a play on the conundrum of The Timeless Child.
The subject made its debut way back in the second episode of Whittaker’s first season, where she comes face-to-face with some very ominous-looking Remnants.
“We see deeper though, further back,” they told her.
“The Timeless Child… we see what’s hidden, even from yourself. The outcast, abandoned and unknown…”
Does the word ‘timeless’ refer to the Cybermen’s immortality?
Cybermen started off as humans with cybernetic enhancements, before ultimately replacing every part of themselves until nothing was left, so their lifespans are indeed timeless.
Alternatively, could the newly-introduced Jo Martin be the Timeless Child?
As a new iteration of The Doctor it seems strange that she wasn’t recognised by Jodie, who is supposedly a future iteration of her.
Since she exists outside of Jodie’s own timelines, does that make her timeless?
The remnants specifically said “deeper… further back,” which could be a reference to Jo existing far in Jodie’s past.
Perhaps The Timeless Children are the Time Lords more broadly.
The Gallifreyan race attempted to destroy reality itself in David Tennant episode End of Time, so they could exist as a timeless state of consciousness outside of their war with the Daleks.
If any of them succeeded, then perhaps Jodie will have to face off against her own species.
Doctor Who continues Sunday on BBC One at 7:10pm and will be available to stream on iPlayer.
