The 33-year-old plays Joe Goldberg in the show, a stalker-turned-killer who carries out a number of murders across the two seasons.
*Spoilers ahead for You season two*
There were plenty of shocks in store for fans after season two premiered on Boxing Day last year, particularly when Joe killed a man called Jasper before chopping up his body and putting it through a meat grinder in a restaurant.
During a chat with BuzzFeed, Penn answered fans’ ‘Burning Questions’ and revealed that while the Jasper death was gruesome, there was another seen which required even more blood.
He said: “When Delilah is dead on the floor of the cage, with her throat slashed, the amount of fake blood that was required to make that look real was more gruesome.”
Joe initially thought he had killed Delilah, a one-time fling, but it turned out to be his latest girlfriend, Love (Victoria Pedretti).
Penn previously admitted he initially wasn’t happy with season two’s shock ending surrounding Love.
He told Entertainment Weekly: “When I found out where it was headed, I was kind of crestfallen because, just selfishly, I wanted there to be a more positive resolution.
“But just like Beck dying in the first season, I realised that this was the most accurate, the most reflective of reality, the most responsible to be like, ‘No, Joe doesn’t get to have that.’”
In fact, Penn eventually thought the shock ending was perfect for his character.
He explained: “He’s not actually a person who just needs somebody who loves him. He’s a murderer! “He’s a sociopath. He’s abusive. He’s delusional. And he’s self-obsessed.
“You can’t fool yourself into thinking that he just needs somebody who’s right for him. Nobody’s right for him! So actually, the ending’s perfect.”
You series one and two is available to stream on Netflix now.
