California Highway Patrol were called to investigate the message after it was spotted by other motorists on SR-99, around 80 miles west of San Francisco, on Saturday.

The full message, written in thick black lettering, read: “HELP ME SHES NOT MY MUM!! HELP!!”
A post to CHP’s Facebook page said authorities received a call reporting the sign at around 5.02pm.
Two officers and a K-9 unit performed what was described as a “high risk enforcement stop” on the vehicle, which immediately stopped on the shoulder of the highway.
After speaking to the driver about the message, officers established that a female juvenile in the back of the car had “made it all up and thought it was a fun thing to do”.
Her mother had been unaware of what she was doing, and both were allowed to leave the scene.
California Highway Patrol said on Facebook: “This is a reminder that parents need to be aware of what their children are doing in the back seat at all times.
“Six CHP units were assigned to this call instead of responding to legitimate calls or patrolling their beats because of this hoax.”
The message concluded with the hashtags #notfunny, #beawareofyourkids, and #why?
Facebook users responded to the post with a mixture of anger and amusement.
“My kid would be in so much trouble, she would of been better off going with the CHP,” wrote one.
“This isn’t the parents fault, they were responsibly keeping their eyes on the road,” said another.
“Maybe the girl should’ve sat in a holding cell for awhile!”
A third said: “A stint in juvenile hall and community service would have been a better punishment. This is NOT ok.”
