A 23-year-old woman was declared dead at the scene, while a 24-year-old was taken to hospital having suffered a broken arm.
The incident occurred at 12.20am on Sunday at the Broadway Junction station in the city’s Brooklyn neighbourhood.
Kwame Martin, who was also on the platform, said: “You could hear them screaming as the train rode over them. You could hear bones crunching.
Witnesses said they were visibly intoxicated as they exited the train and made their way along the platform arm-in-arm.
As the train began pulling out of the station one of them stumbled and fell between two of the train’s carriages and onto the tracks.
Kwame added: “Her friend tried to catch her but the weight was too much for her and they both fell on the tracks between the two train cars. Then the A train started leaving the station.”
“Honestly, it was terrible. Everyone’s initial reaction was to bang on the train to alert everyone inside to hit the emergency red button.”

One man who saw the accident told local station ABC7: “They had on heels and they walked out.
“They were walking on [the platform].
“She fell in, the train kept going.”
Cory Walker, 30, tried to stop the train pulling out.
“Me and my friend tried to bang on the side of the train to get the conductor’s attention,” he told the Washington Post.
“It didn’t work fast enough, because one got crushed.
“The train struck both of them.”
The Subway was suspended for a short period in the aftermath of the incident.
The identity of the woman who was killed is yet to be released.
An average weekday sees around 5.7 million rides on the New York Subway.
In 2017, there were almost 900 incidents in which someone went onto the tracks or was hit by a train having been stood on the platform.
Pilots schemes to install doors on the edge of Subway platforms are currently being considered by transport officials.
