MANCHESTER UNITED could be trumped by Bologna in their attempts to bring Zlatan Ibrahimovic back.
The 38-year-old left Old Trafford in 2018 to sign for Major League Soccer team LA Galaxy in the US.
But Italian publication TuttoMercatoWeb claimed the Red Devils could be on the verge of attempting to bring him back from America.
Ibrahimovic is out of contract at his current club LA Galaxy next month.
However Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has competition for the legendary striker in the shape of Bologna.
Speaking to Radio Anch’io Sport, as translated by MailOnline, the Italian club’s director Riccardo Bignon confirmed the manager Sinisa Mihajlovic is interested.
He told the radio station: “Over the last few months, Ibra and Mihajlovic have been in touch, also because of a difficult period for Sinisa.
“They have been sharing opinions about the Swedish player’s future, and he is the only one who will be able to decide where it lies.
“Over the next few months, we will get to know where his future lies, we still don’t know where he will go.
“The idea of [him joining Bologna] is fascinating, the phone calls between the coach and Ibra are there and if he wants to return to Italy, we’re ready.
“Our ambition is to enter Europe. Maybe not this year, but we are doing what we can to arrive there.”
Italian newspaper Corriere delo Sport reported last weekend that Bologna president Joey Saputo had sanctioned an £8m-a-year 18-month contract for the Swedish star.
Fellow Serie A sides Napoli and Inter have also being linked with him.
If Ibra decides on his own Italian Job, it would come as a bitter blow to fans of Manchester United.
He grabbed 29 goals in 53 appearances after joining the Red Devils in 2016 and helped them to win the EFL Cup and Europa League.
Solskjaer is desperate for striking reinforcements following the summer sales of Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez to Inter Milan.
His side are currently tenth in the Premier League table and have found the net just 13 times in their 11 top-flight matches.
