THE Great British Bake Off is coming to an end NEXT WEEK, but first the bakers had it through the semi-finals.
Patisserie Week was full of challenges and surprises and we’ve noted down all the big moments that took place in the big white tent when the remaining four contestants made some bakes for Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith to try.
You learn something new everyday, and tonight we discovered just how much joy a domed tartlet bring to Sandi Toksvig’s life.
Yep – the presenter was literally giddy as she spoke about the delicate treat, leaving Noel Fielding and the bakers in stitches.
This week’s signature bake was eight domed tartlets that had to be elegant and beautifully decorated.
The Technical Challenge was as tricky as ever with the bakers making a rectangular Gâteau St-Honoré, comprised of two layers.
While the Showstopper was a spectacular sugar glass display case with an edible depiction of something special to the baker inside.
After their fellow baker’s elimination during Pastry Week, the bakers kept the contestant’s presence going in the tent with a sweet gesture.
Steph explained: “We’re all wearing a tie for young Henry who we miss intensely.”
Alice added: “We’re got ties on because Henry left.”
While David added: “He’s living on in us this week… but it is very hot in the tent so I’m going to take it off now.”
During the technical, Rosie had a nightmare with her attempts to make Prue’s Gâteau St-Honoré.
She cried: “My choux’s gone wrong, and my pastry too. I might just go home now.”
The vet wailed to Sandi: “Everything’s gone wrong. I’m remaking everything, I’m remaking my pastry, I’m remaking my choux but then my second choux didn’t work either and I make choux all the time.
“My choux pastry is was too thin, I couldn’t pipe it, it was just blobs.”
Despite all of this, Rosie managed to get everything done in time. And the judges loved it so much that they named her the winner!
Alice became Star Baker for the second time in week nine, despite her Showstopper, which was an Ocean inspired sugar glass case with a lemon genoise sponge cake, failing to impress the judges.
However, the judges loved the taste of Alice’s Mocha, Hazelnut and Orange domed tart with espresso buttercream.
Unfortunately, Rosie Brandreth-Poynter didn’t produce the perfect bakes for Judges Paul and Prue, but at least she managed to make it so far in the competition.
Speaking after getting the boot, Rosie said: “Well I never ever imagined I would get this far. Regardless of anything I was so amazed to get to the Semi Final, of course everyone wants to get to the Final, but I was so happy to get to where I did. I have to say I found it slightly crazy that I got here and overall I have absolutely loved every minute of it.”
On her time on the show she added: “If I had any regrets it would be that I should have done some things in a simpler way, but I wanted to push myself and stretch my skills. Maybe that was a bad game plan!”
You can tune in to the grand final of the tenth series on Tuesday, October 29, 2019.
Yep – that will be the last Bake Off episode for the year and we’ll have to wait until the new batch of bakers enter the tent in 2020.
The final will, of course, be on at 8pm.
