RETIRED boxer Anthony Ogogo has undergone his NINETEENTH operation after suffering shocking injuries from the sport.
And Ogogo, who won Olympic bronze in the London 2012 Games, has revealed the latest one is to fix what George Groves called his ‘d*** nose’.
Ogogo was forced to hang up his gloves in March 2019 at the age of just 30, after admitting defeat to recover from devastating injuries.
His last fight was an eight-round stoppage defeat to Craig Cunningham where he suffered a broken eye socket.
But the two latest operations were on his nose – where he had to have a rib removed to fix it up.
Posting on Instagram, Ogogo, who starred on hit BBC show Strictly Come Dancing in 2015, wrote: “It’ll take more than a couple of black eyes, a sore face and a broken rib to dampen my spirit and remove my smile.
“Last week I had operation 18 and 19 of my life on my eye and face.
“The eye to eek a little bit more vision out of the left eye (that took a battering during a fight I should never have been in – more on this another time).
“The face because my nose has been broken so many times breathing through it has become almost impossible.”
He then revealed it was fellow retired boxer Groves who gave him the unfortunate nickname.
He added: “In my 18 years of boxing I’d suffered numerous headbutts and big blows that deviated my septum and made my nose look more like that of Steve Bruce than Steve McQueen.
“So much so that back in our amateur days my old @gbboxing @teamgb teammate @stgeorgegroves used to call me “d*** nose”.
“‘Why you calling me d*** nose mate?’ I asked. His response ‘because your nose goes off to the left like a d***’. Factual and funny, some of George’s best work.
“I actually liked my ‘d*** nose’, the crooked and flat nose I had, I wore with pride – battle scars from my time fighting and becoming one of the best boxers in the world.”
But Ogogo’s world came crashing down in just his 12th pro fight when he suffered a horrendous injury to his eyes.
But it is his nose, taken its own hits throughout his amateur days, that is the object of repair.
He continued: Unfortunately my nose was “so crushed” (as the surgeon descriptively put it) I was I unable to breathe properly and whatever I go into next I’m going to want to be able to breathe.
“So he broke a bit of bone and cartilage from my rib to rebuild my nose and give me these things called nostrils, that people have, which I barely had anymore.
“Hopefully my nose still will go off to the left and have a story behind it because I am proud of my bruised and battered body, I’m proud of the miles it’s put in and the experiences it’s got out.”
