ALLAN SAINT-MAXIMIN grabbed plenty of attention as he helped Newcastle beat Manchester United yesterday – and not just because of his performance.
The French winger, 22, was forced to cover up his Gucci headband during the game, causing quite the stir on social media.
Saint-Maximin arrived at St James’ Park donning the designer headband to keep his dreadlocks in place.
But as he stepped out on to the field, the branding was covered by a sticker – not that it held him back.
The band – which costs £180 on Gucci’s official website – contravenes sponsorship regulations in the Premier League.
And therefore the £16million signing had to take extra steps to mask the brand name.
Newcastle man Saint-Maximin, who arrived from Nice in the summer, took to Twitter after the victory to share his delight and then added an old photo from him… wearing a headband – and then retweeted a post about his Gucci headband.
He wrote: “2002 vs 2019 glow up? Still the same passion for football, dancing, fashion and… HEADBANDS of course.
“Started from the bottom now we here, story stayed the same through the money and the fame.”
It is safe to say social media was absolutely loving it.
One person brilliantly posted a video of Eddie Hearn shouting: “My darling, you with the headband, you are different gravy.”
Another said: “You knew Man United lost that game when Saint-Maximin stepped out the tunnel with a taped Gucci headband lol.”
A third joked: “Steve Bruce celebrating by tucking into a Gregg’s sausage roll with Saint-Maximin’s Gucci headband on.”
One user added: “Saint-Maximin playing in a Gucci headband whilst embarrassing Man United at St James Park, you love to see it.”
A viewer wrote: “That bored I’m currently trying to decide which United players would suit Saint-Maximin’s Gucci headband, thinking Maguire would definitely pull it off the worst.”
Another typed: “Unreal performance from saint maximin. Wore a Gucci headband with a sticker on it and tore United to shreds. Love you bro.”
And a final account tweeted: “Allan Saint-Maximin and a Gucci headband. Iconic duo. Clearly Premier League wasnt ready for this sauce.”
