THUNDER storms and torrential rain are set to batter parts of Britain today with 38 flood alerts in place across the country.
No part of the UK is expected to escape the heavy downpours today with blustery showers and storms expected to continue into the rest of the week.
There are currently six flood warnings and 32 flood alerts in place across the country.
The Met Office yesterday warned there is a danger some towns may become cut off after parts of the country were drenched in two inches of rain.
A low pressure system that has been steadily gaining speed as it travels north through the Atlantic is expected to take charge of Britain’s skies throughout the morning.
The rain will be followed by strong winds with speeds in some areas of Scotland reaching highs of almost 40mph.
Met Office forecaster Helen Roberts said: “It’s rather a soggy start to the working week especially across northern and western parts of the country – a very wet commute on Monday morning and there will be a lot of surface water around on the roads.
“That rain will gradually push its way eastwards throughout the day. Central and southeastern parts of England will experience the drier weather for longer but even there it will be raining by the end of the day with temperatures somewhat suppressed underneath all that cloud and rain.
“That will continue to journey eastwards through Monday evening with clearer skies pushing in from the northwest behind but also quite frequent and blustery showers as well – some of those will be really very heavy indeed with some torrential downpours, thunder, lightning and hail mixed in.”

Tonight will see heavy showers mainly across the northwest of the UK with Tuesday bringing a day of heavy, blustery downpours.
Yesterday, an amber warning was put in place for an area around Norwich which covers parts of Norfolk and Suffolk.
It said homes and businesses are likely to be flooded with damage to some buildings and adds there is “a good chance some communities are cut off by flooded roads”.
It also warned of a “danger to life” due to deep or fast flowing floodwater and says power cuts are possible and driving conditions could become “difficult”.
BBC weather forecaster Helen Willetts said: “As a result of all the rain we have seen over the weekend, particularly in Scotland and the eastern side of England, we are left with a few flood warnings in force and there is more rain to come.
“It’s not just rain but the winds are expected to get up to gale force across the west and severe gale force across parts of north and western Scotland.
“More rain and strong to gale force winds will make for some really unpleasant conditions. The ground is so saturated the spray and standing water will just sit on the faster routes in particular and be a hazard to travellers.
“It does drag its heels to clear in southern and eastern areas but should do by Tuesday. It does mean there will be torrential downpours with hail and thunder.”
