THE Capture has been one of the year’s surprise telly hits, with a second series of the gripping surveillance thriller planned before the debut season concludes.
Fans of the BBC1 nail-biter tuning in for tomorrow night’s finale will get an idea how the twisting plotline might link to a sequel.
But there are many loose ends to be tied up.
We ask eight crucial questions and suggest possible answers . . .
LEAD character Shaun (Callum Turner) is a squaddie acquitted of murdering a Taliban fighter after lawyers argue the body-cam footage used to convict him is unreliable.
Later, Shaun is seen on CCTV appearing t assault and kidnap his glamorous female barrister and love interest Hannah – but viewers know the attack footage has been faked.
When DI Rachel Carey (Holliday Grainger) brings the soldier in, he is adamant of his innocence and Rachel ends up convinced he is a good guy after all.
The finale may finally see the two lead characters get it together – a union which all fans of the show secretly want to see.
IT emerged last week that Shaun was the victim of “correction”, a process where CCTV footage is manipulated by the Secret Services to secure terror convictions when the real evidence that would nail suspects is inadmissable in court.
To add to the confusion, it turns out Shaun was actually fitted up by a group of activists trying to prove that Anglo-US Secret Services are doctoring CCTV footage.
And this makes the spooks, led by CIA man Frank, very angry.
Although Frank has apparently had Hannah murdered to silence her, he would argue her death was a small sacrifice as “correction” convictions prevent the deaths of thousands.
FOLLOWERS of The Capture will know the finale stars this high-level CIA officer, played by former Bond girl Famke Janssen.
She’s been sent to keep an eye on Frank and his team as they fail to get a grip on the crisis surrounding Shaun’s escape. But it is unclear whether she could be the soldier’s heroine or worst nightmare.
Jessica’s arrival in London might mean the agency is now taking drastic measures to bring things under control.
Alternatively, she might decide Shaun has been the victim of a reckless scheme that she intends to put a stop to – before his actions expose the CIA’s UK operations.
THE last episode saw Frank tell a co-conspirator she had to find out where Shaun’s young daughter went to school.
Which suggests they are going to use the threat of harming her to rein him in.
They may abduct her and use her to blackmail Shaun into surrendering completely – which would ratchet up the stand-off between the enraged soldier and the agency even further.
They could also kill her as punishment for Shaun defying them, though they don’t have to lay a finger on her – just create some CCTV footage to make it look like they did. Either way, it’s not looking good for the girl.
WE saw how Shaun’s friend Mat had colluded with the Secret Services as they tried to track him down.
He appeared to help them make a video of himself being tortured by the CIA in a bid to get Shaun to reveal where Hannah was. And her body was later found in the boot of the car which Mat had lent to fugitive Shaun.
But it is unclear what the Secret Services did to make Mat betray his friend, particularly as Shaun turned to him for help in his hour of need.
Mat may yet appear in the finale to reveal all – though there is no telling if he might save Shaun’s neck or hang his buddy out to dry.
IT’S the question at the heart of the The Capture, because it could shatter our perceptions of Shaun, who viewers have so far championed.
The drama started with the soldier having his murder conviction quashed for killing an unarmed man during combat in Afghanistan.
His lawyer, Hannah, proved the footage of the killing was unsafe – but she didn’t prove he did not pull the trigger.
If he did, it might turn him from victimised hero to justice- dodging villain getting his just desserts.
WHETHER he killed the Afghan in the heat of battle or not, it is now clear that Shaun did not murder Hannah – but there is no guarantee detective Rachel can save his skin.
The police officer, who is now helping the fugitive squaddie, has been taken off the case and has the British and American Secret Services breathing down her neck.
The one piece of evidence she has is CCTV footage of Hannah alive and well after Shaun supposedly dragged her into his car before killing her.
But she still has to work out who to send it to and whether she can keep it out of the clutches of Shaun’s enemies.
SHAUN’S nightmare was caused by the justice activists trying to expose the spooks “correction” of CCTV footage.
They aimed to do this by creating a high-profile illusion of a murder – then revealing the truth behind the faked footage.
After receiving huge publicity following his murder appeal, Shaun was picked as the fall guy, and human rights lawyer Hannah set him up.
The activists always intended to show that Shaun had not killed anyone, and when they finally met Shaun they tried to get him to hand himself in so they could complete their plot – but he smelt a rat and fled.
But who can he really trust?
