But where are these prisons located and how many inmates do they house? Here’s all the info.
HM Prison Downview is a women’s closed category prison.
It’s located on the outskirts of Banstead in Surrey, England.
The Surrey prison is the first in the UK to house transgender women.
A wing of a female prison in Sutton will be separated off to house three inmates who have transitioned to being women and hold gender recognition certificates.
The three transgender prisoners at HMP Downview will not have access to other offenders.
The prison opened in 1989 as a category C Male Prison, converted from the former nurses’ home of Banstead Hospital.
HM Prison and Young Offenders Institute Bullingdon operates as a local Prison holding both remanded and sentenced prisoners.
The prison also accommodates young adults between the ages of 18-21.
HMP Bullingdon is located near Bicester, in the Oxfordshire countryside.
The prison generally only holds prisoners on short sentences (under 12 months) and those on remand.
HMP Downview’s houses around 300 inmates, all of which are women.
HMP Bullingdon’s capacity is more than 1,100 inmates.
