A 10-YEAR-OLD girl who was left fighting for her life after she was stuck by a car in a suspected hit-and-run last night has died.
A 23-year-old man who police believe to be the driver of the white Renault Kangoo is currently in police custody.
A second 23-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.
Two women – aged 31 and 28 – have been arrested by police on suspicion of perverting the course of justice as part of the investigation and remain in police custody at this time.
Paramedics raced to the scene after the schoolgirl was hit by a vehicle at 6.40pm in Kenton, Newcastle.
The vehicle stopped shortly after the collision, but the driver ran from the scene on foot.
She was rushed to the Royal Victoria Infirmary with serious injuries where she later died.
Police are supporting the girl’s grieving family.
Northumbria Police Chief Inspector, Chris Grice, said there is nothing the police could do to bring the girl back to her grieving family.
He said: “This is a horrific incident that has robbed a family of their little girl and has had a significant impact on members of the community in Kenton.
“Our officers have been supporting her family since last night and were with them when she passed away in hospital.
“They will continue to receive all the support they need and I hope it can bring them some comfort knowing we have a suspect in custody.”
Ch Insp Grice added: “Extra officers will be conducting patrols in Kenton this afternoon to speak to concerned members of the public and carry out enquiries.
“We know this has had a big impact on the community but we know that the public will rally together at this difficult time to support the victim’s family.
“We would urge anyone who saw what happened, or has information that could help to assist police, to contact officers on 101.”
Police are appealing anyone with dashcam footage that may have filmed the vehicle in the moments before the collision is also asked to contact officers.
One resident described the scene as “total chaos”.
They told ChronicleLive:” My son’s friend was riding his bike and he heard a bang, like an explosion.
“He came in here to tell us ‘I think someone has been hit’.
“We went out to look and I saw someone frantically doing CPR.
“It was total chaos, there were ambulances coming from both directions.”
A spokesman for the North East Ambulance Service said: “We were called shortly before 7pm to a road traffic collision involving a pedestrian and a car.
“We sent two double-crewed ambulances and a clinical care manager.
“A young girl has been taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary A&E.”
