SUPERMARKET Sweep struck a chord with viewers after a contestant accidentally addressed Rylan as ‘Dale’.
Dale Winton, who fronted the original show, died last April after an esteemed presenting career on the small screen.
Rylan has since taken up the mantle, but admitted before the gig that Dale had left big shoes to fill.
On Wednesday night, competitor Will absent-mindedly blurted out the words: ‘Thank you, Dale,” leaving Rylan’s jaw firmly on the floor.
“I’ve got to say, that’s the biggest compliment of my career,” Rylan replied, before pulling Will in for a hug.
“That’s the best review I’m going to get for this whole game show, let me tell you,” he added.
While the studio was full of laughter about the blunder, viewers at home were full of praise for how Rylan handled the situation.
“Rylan aww bless yah hun, being called Dale is a great compliment!” one Twitter user wrote.
Another posted: “Bless one of the contestants on Supermarket Sweep calling Rylan ‘Dale’. Loved Rylan’s response – biggest compliment of his career! Loved Dale and love Rylan as well, really want to go on the show now!”
A third surprised viewer chipped in: “I can’t believe it! Rylan was just called “Dale” on Supermarket Sweep!”
While a fourth quipped: “Rule of TV: Don’t confuse the current TV host with the former deceased TV host.”
The faux pas comes after Rylan felt compelled to take to Twitter to hit out at the trolls criticising the show.
Supermarket Sweep has been slapped with complaints about food wastage, plastic packaging and age diversity since it kicked off earlier this month.
“Glad people are enjoying sweep,” he wrote to his 1.6m Twitter followers.
“Even more glad that the people who tweet me saying they ‘hate’ it and I’m ‘terrible at my job and make them feel sick’ are boosting my viewing figures.”
He signed the message off: “God bless you dear.”
Supermarket Sweep airs weekdays on ITV2 at 8pm.
