SOPHIE Willan is a comedian who fronts the voice over on Channel 4’s newest reality show, The Circle.
But this isn’t her first time working in television and media, having built an impressive resume for herself prior to landing what appears to be the ideal job. Here’s everything you need to know.
Sophie Wllan is a British comedian and TV personality who grew up in Bolton and spent the majority of her childhood years in care.
Fans later established that her mother was a heroin addict, having further admitted that she also worked as an escort, which heavily influenced the narrative to her show Branded, where sex work was one of the key topics.
Aside from that, you may also be familiar with Sophie’s work over on BBC Radio 4 where she helms Sophie Willan’s Guide to Normality, which returned for a second series over in July, 2019.
Shortly after, the funny woman learned she would be providing voice over work for The Circle, which is, of course, hosted by Emma Wllis.
Willan has also appeared on As Yet Untitled (Dave), Live At The Comedy Store (Comedy Central), Up Late With Rylan (Channel 5), Still Open All Hours (BBC One), Click And Collect (BBC One), Class Dismissed (BBC One), The One Show (BBC One) and The Tez O Clock Show (Channel 4).
Given that comedy plays a huge part in her life – and her career – in 2016, Sophie gave her debut stand up performance titled On Record, which is based on her experiences of growing up in and out of the care system.
The event was a success, gaining critical acclaim in the process, which ultimately led to the launch of her nationwide tour in 2017, along with a commission to have the show turned into a BBC Radio 4 series.
The show has been billed as a cross between Big Brother, Catfish and Black Mirror and is nothing like we’ve ever seen before.
Each contestant moves into a newly refurbished block of flats in London and is handed the keys to their own apartment.
None of the stars ever meet one another in person, until they are knocked out of the game.
Instead they communicate with one another by a specially designed social media app.
The platform is completely voice activated, meaning the contestants speak to one another through the app – rather than face-to-face.
The game means that any of the stars can pretend to be whatever, and whoever, they want to be.
At the end of the series, the most popular player – the person whoever gets the most likes – will be in with a chance to win the £100,000 prize pot.
