SECRET designs for Apple’s next smartphone may have been revealed months before its official launch.
A video of alleged “dummy units” – fake phones based on prototype designs – for the iPhone 11 has surfaced online, potentially revealing what it looks like.
Apple is expected to unveil a trio of new iPhone models in September.
As usual, the gadget maker is keeping its handsets under tight wraps until then.
But we’ve seen endless leaks in recent months, revealing almost every detail of the new phones.
Now mobile retailer Mobile Fun has released a video showcasing an iPhone 11 “dummy unit” – a fake phone based on leaked designs.
Dummy units often turn up in the weeks before an iPhone launch, and give a good idea of what the final product might look like.
In this case, Chinese suppliers mocked up the dummy units to test out designs for iPhone 11 phone cases.
“These handset models have been sent from our teams in China direct from case testing for the upcoming Olixar range and are correct in terms of physical size, port orientation, and screen size,” a Mobile Fun spokesperson told The Sun.
As expected, the iPhone 11 dummy unit features a triple-lens camera on the back.
That’s in contrast to the single camera on the iPhone 8, and the double camera on the iPhone X and iPhone XS.
Rivals have launched four- and five-camera phones, so Apple is under pressure to compete.
Multiple cameras can make significant improvements to your photography game.
For instance, several cameras have an easier time at sensing depth in a 3D space.
This allows for much more accurate augmented reality apps, including realistic Snapchat filters or better versions of games like Pokémon Go.
Multiple cameras also allow for a smartphone to have several different types of lens.
For example, you could have a wide-angle lens, a zoom lens, and a fish-eye lens for different types of photography.
Adding more cameras is also an easy way to improve a smartphone, giving you another reason to upgrade to the latest iPhone.
How iPhone sizes have changed over the years
We’re also expecting a number of other minor changes.
Earlier this month, we revealed how experts believe that the iPhone 11 will have Apple’s biggest screen yet – at nearly 7 inches.
And another rumour suggests that a cheap £499 iPhone may also be on the way.
The bad news is that we won’t know anything for certain until Apple makes an official announcement.
Although these iPhone 11 mock-ups look likely to be accurate, it’s impossible to know for sure.
And there’s always a chance that they may be based on old designs that Apple has since modified for the actual iPhone release.
As always, it’s important to take iPhone leaks and rumours with a pinch of salt.
In other news, the iPhone 11 ‘may charge to 50% in just 30 minutes’ thanks to new ultra-fast plug and cable.
The phone could also be ‘coming in two new colours’ we’ve never seen from Apple before, report claims.
And Apple has previewed dozens of new emoji set to arrive on your iPhone later this year.
