BLUE POINT (5-2) was sharp as a nail as he scooted home to the land the King’s Stand for the second year in a row.
James Doyle produced his mount to narrowly get the better of the well-punted Baattash (2-1f) in a pulsating finish to the feature sprint.
It had been dubbed a two-horse race beforehand, and that’s exactly what it was as the front two in the market fought out the finish – though not in the order many had expected.
James Doyle always had Blue Point in the vanguard and the star sprinter had that little bit too much in the tank late on as he landed the race for the second year on the trot.
Baattash may have found it difficult being stranded with just Houtzen for company, but in the end he was found out by a lack of stamina.
Soldier’s Call (16-1) ran a huge race to finish third.
The winning rider said: “It couldn’t have gone much smoother.
“He’s a really though warrior and although he had to do a lot of the running on his own, he was very tough.
“He would prefer better ground I think but he showed he’s the true champion today.
“It’s very tough for Will Buick missing out on a big winner. Hopefully it softens the blow that it’s one of his best mates who’s picking it up for him.”
Blue Moon is now a general 3-1f for the July Cup.
