JAPAN has issued an emergency tsunami warning following a shocking 6.8-magnitude deep sea earthquake off its coast.
Early reports claim larger than normal waves have already started crashing against beaches in the north of the country.
Tsunami warnings have now been issued for the Yamagata, Niigata and Ishikawa prefectures.
There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties from the quake, which hit 53 miles northeast of the island of Honshu.
However, Japan’s Meteorological Agency issued a warning for a tsunami along the north west coast of the main island.
The epicentre of the quake was at a depth of about seven miles in the Sea of Japan.
