WINE-LOVERS can now enjoy a stay in a wine barrel surrounded by a working vineyard in Portugal.
Located in Douro, Quinta da Pacheca allows guests to stay in the oversized barrels just metres from the sprawling 280-year-old wine estate.
Each 30m suite includes a circular double bed, private wardrobe and bathroom with walk-in-shower, skylight windows and a private terrace.
They’re also fully air conditioned and fitted with Wi-Fi.
The pine-wood barrels were designed by property owners Paulo Pereira and Maria do Céu Gonçalves and are exact replicas of the ones used at the estate.
Wine-fans can then leave their cabin to explore the 140-acre vineyard before trying some of the wines themselves, including red, white, rose and even port.
A vineyard representative told the Metro: “Quinta da Pacheca created the wine barrels as a bold architectural project of suites to reinforce the originality of the wine tourism offered at the site.
“In an idyllic romantic setting, these wine barrel rooms will provide visitors a unique experience to the nature and significance of the Douro wine region.”
The estate also has its own on-site restaurant where guests can enjoy the local wine as well as other locally sourced products like jam and olive oil.
Drinkers who want to try it for themselves can book a night from €190 (£160) or €205 (£182) with breakfast included.
Guests who don’t fancy the barrels can also stay at The Wine House Hotel with normal bedrooms available.
In Mexico, you can also stay in a Tequila barrel next door to a distillery.
The hotel is located in the actual town of Tequila – the only place in the world allowed to produce the beverage officially.
A Disney hotel also now caters to wine fans, with wine dispensers in the bedroom available with a click of a button.
