GHOST RECON BREAKPOINT’S E3 demo shows off the game’s huge playground, many if its toys, and plenty of chance to use them.
Need to take out a killer robot? You’ve got EMP grenades for that.
Want to get rid of a rocket sentry up in a lookout tower? Bust out the TAC-50.
Need to see through walls? Chuck out a sensor grenade.
The list is endless. Sometimes you don’t even need to use any of your own toys – if there’s a drone flying overhead, just roll around in the mud and you’ll render yourself invisible until it’s buzzed off.
Breakpoint has got a very simple premise – you’re one of a band of special forces soldiers doing battle against some deserters-cum-mercenaries who have taken over the tropical island a tech billionaire has built up to create an army of helpful robots.
These bad guys have turned them into killing machines, and it’s your job to stop them any way you can.
Whether you’re facing grunts, those special forces deserters or killer robots, things generally seem to play out in the same way.
You start trying to be as quiet as possible, taking out or disabling as many as you can.
Eventually your cover is blown and it develops into a full-on firefight, and you mow the rest down as you hope like hell you thinned them out enough before things went south to allow you to survive.
You can tweak your approach, though, depending on how you want to play.
Make a camp in the wilderness and you can change your class, make some bandages and restock your ammo, as well as waiting for the perfect time of day to launch your assault.
Your island paradise playground is littered with activities and missions to jump onto, and myriad ways to get around.
If you feel like wreaking a little havoc while making your way from point A to point B, most of those vehicles seem to have miniguns to mow your enemies down.
Failing that, though, you can always just run them over.
Whether you’re running people over, gunning them down or blowing up their autonomous killer robot tanks it’s hard not to admire the island itself, though.
As you’re stalking your prey using long grass to hide your approach you see it rippling as you push it aside, and as you pause to bandage up the leg you just broke jumping out of helicopter you’re forced to take a moment to admire the flowers as they wave in the breeze.
It’s not a game with much to say, and the story seems likely be dumb as a bag of rocks – but get a crew of three pals together and there’s going to be fun to be had.
Add to that the dedication the developers have already shown they have to listening to feedback to deliver what players want — they’ve added in everything from bloused boots to AI squadmates purely from player feedback so far–and you’ve got what could be winning combination for fans of special operations combat.
