CHINGIZ will be hoping to lead Azerbaijan to victory in the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 as their representative.
With his single Truth, the former Pop Idol winner will face tough competition while battling it out in the second semi-final on May 16, 2019. Here’s all you need to know…
Chingiz Mustafayev was born in Moscow before relocating to Qazax, Azerbaijan at the young age of six.
It was during his childhood years that the singer soon realized his strong passion for music, which brought along his hobby for playing instruments and composing songs.
Chingiz already knew how to play the guitar before he even became a teenager.
At 13, he had moved to Baki with his mother and brother where he would go on to audition for the Azerbaijani version of Pop Idol in 2007.
He went on to be crowned the winner of his series, having at that point gained an incredible amount of exposure in the music industry and subsequently built a wide following for himself.
Chingiz represented Azerbaijan internationally in the New Wave competition in Jūrmala, Latvia back in 2013.
He didn’t get quite as far as he did in Pop Idol, only managing to secure the 11th spot while having graced the stage with Russian superstar Polina Gagarina.
By 2016, Chingiz had tried his luck again after entering himself in the sixth season of The Voice of Ukraine.
Despite having passed the audition stage, he was eliminated in the subsequent Battle Round.
Then, on March 8, 2019, it was announced that Chingiz will represent Azerbaijan in the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Tel Aviv, Israel.
He will be closing the second semi-final on Thursday, May 18, 2019.
Despite having had an impressive run on televised competition shows – such as Pop Idol – Chingiz didn’t start releasing music of his own until 2018.
The release of his fourth track Truth would go on to be chosen as the official song to represent Azerbaijan in the biggest live music festival in the world.
Chingiz also runs a fairly popular YouTube channel, which currently boasts of more than 45,000 subscribers.
He updates his fans on a regular basis through the platform, posting vlogs, behind the scenes footage from his rehearsal and releasing his official music videos.
Chingiz will perform his single Truth during Eurovision’s second semi-final on May 16, 2018.
Given that he is placed as number 18 in the line-up, Chingiz will be the last person to grace the stage and convince fans why they need to vote for him.
The track was written and composed by Chingiz and collaborating partner Borislav Milanov.
The Eurovision Song Contest 2019 commenced on Tuesday, May 14 and will conclude on Saturday, May 18, 2019.
The second Semi-Finals will take place in Tel Aviv on Thursday, May 16.
The Grand Final will take place on Saturday May 18.
If you’re wondering how to watch it, tune in to BBC One from 8pm on May 18 – all the actions will be broadcast live.
The show will go on until around 11.40pm when the winner is expected to be announced.
