GAME of Thrones star Nathalie Emmanuel says Missandei’s death in shackles was like a “punch to the gut”.
The actress, 30, admits she struggled seeing her character killed off in the hit show.
She told Elle: “It was a punch to the gut, is what it was. I found shooting those scenes in chains really hard, really emotional.
“Being shackled – even though it’s make-believe and somebody comes straight away and lets me out of them—is really heavy.
“As a person who has ancestry of slavery, the impact wasn’t lost on me.
“The fact that this was her journey, she was free, and now she’s found herself back in chains.
“It was cruel, as you said. But this is the brutality of the world that we’re in.
“As much as we love these characters – ‘She’s been through so much!’ ‘We’re rooting for her!’ ‘She didn’t deserve it!’ – nobody deserves it, but it doesn’t mean the bad guys won’t get them anyway.”
Since leaving Hollyoaks in 2010– in which she played troubled teen Sasha Valentine – Nathalie has gone from soap star to one of Hollywood’s hottest talents, thanks to roles in two of the world’s biggest franchises.
For the last six years she’s played Missandei – Daenerys’ adviser and wing-woman – on HBO’s monster hit.
And in 2015, she also joined the petrol-head gang of The Fast And The Furious, playing computer hacker Ramsey in Furious 7 and Fast & Furious 8, which broke records after taking £425million on its opening weekend.
She said: “I literally was working in a clothes shop when I got the message about the audition. I was miserable in that job, if I’m honest.
“Then I was like ‘this part’s mine, I need to get this part.’ And I don’t ever say that, I never say ‘I’ve got to get this part, or I need this or I want this’.”
