A FIRST time mum was left heartbroken after she was forced to give birth alone while her partner secretly jetted off on holiday with another woman.
Sarah Burgess, 23, from Runcorn, had been devastated when Peter O’Neill, the father of her child, had mysteriously disappeared days before their baby was due.
The pair met back in October 2014 in the park when Sarah had been walking her dog Bella, and they hit it off right away, with him asking her on a date the next day via text.
Sarah fell for Peter “hook, line and sinker” and after going in a serious relationship, they fell pregnant a few months later.
She said: “It wasn’t planned – in fact it was a massive shock, but when I nervously told him the news, he seemed thrilled.”
Things were “bliss” during the pregnancy, with Sarah saying Peter, 40, was committed to the birth, and showed up to every scan and even brought a pram for the baby.
She said: “I felt on cloud nine as we prepared for the arrival of our baby. We decided not to live together right away, but Peter showed me every day that he was committed to me and the baby.”
But there things started to turn sour just before the baby was due, in September 2015.
Sarah said: “A few weeks before I was due to give birth, Peter mysteriously stopped returning my messages or phone calls.
“I tried not to worry, as I didn’t want to stress the baby out, but after a few days, I started to fear the worst.
“We hadn’t argued and it was so out of character. I was about to give birth and it was too much to bear.”
A panicked Sarah was on the verge of calling the police, but decided to ring Peter’s mum to find out if she had heard anything.
Sarah said: “Surprisingly, she didn’t seem worried at all. ‘Oh yes, I’ve heard from him,’ she said breezily. ‘He’s fine don’t worry. Just busy with work.’”
Sarah’s water broke nine days before the baby was due, and she was heartbroken that she hadn’t managed to reach Peter to let him now.
She said: “After a quick, one hour labour, I held my baby boy Joseph in my arms.
“He was absolutely perfect, but as I stared down at his perfect little features it broke my heart that Peter had missed his birth…and I still didn’t know where he was.”
Three days later, Peter finally turned up, and Sarah stared at him in disbelief as he casually strolled in through the door – with a tan.
Grinning, Peter greeted her cheerily by saying: “Hiya!” and Sarah was furious with his unapologetic nature.

Peter shrugged when she asked where he had been during the birth, and said his phone had broken and he’d been busy with work.
Sarah said: “I fought off tears as Peter just shrugged.
“‘Too busy to check-in with the mother of your child?’ I asked. ‘Yeah, okay then. What’s with the tan?’”
Peter defensively claimed he had been on the sunbeds, but Sarah wasn’t buying his tale and decided to some detective work.
After going through his Facebook, the new mum discovered a series of loved-up snaps a romantic holiday in Dubai, while she had been lying in hospital alone.
Sarah said: “From the moment he’d insisted his golden tan had come from sunbeds, I knew I smelled a rat.
“I could tell he was lying – I just had to find out what about.
“Peter hadn’t gone missing – he’d been on holiday with another woman.
“I messaged the other woman, who explained she’d been seeing Peter since June 2014. I couldn’t believe it. She had no idea about me – or the baby, and she was equally as horrified.”
Sarah ditched the love rat then and there, although she lets him see their son Joseph, and is now trying to move on and find love.
She said: “I’m well rid of that rat but I’ll never forget the day Peter’s tan revealed his affair.”
Peter said: “She’s not my ex, she’s never been my ex. I’ve never been with her. I’ve slept with her, that’s it.
“Yeah I’ve had a child with her but it doesn’t mean she’s my partner. I’ve got something to do with the baby but not with her.
“I was with Nicola, I split with Nicola, then I bumped into Sarah, slept with Sarah, then about a week or so later I got back with Nicola. But I was never in a relationship with Sarah. Nicola was my serious relationship.”
