A MOTORIST who dodged jail for badly hurting a mum in a crash has finally been locked up – for driving away from court just minutes after a judge banned him from the roads.
Student Saif Shaikh, 20, hit the pedestrian as she went to visit a son in permanent hospital care.
Brazen Shaikh admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving on Wednesday – but was back behind the wheel the same day.
Moments after being handed a interim disqualification ahead of his sentencing he was spotted walking 50 yards to the car park and driving off in a VW Golf.
Jailing him for 12 weeks, District Judge James Hatton said: “Probation have told me you have expressed remorse but at the same time you have sought to blame others and sought to avoid culpability.
“You were well aware you were disqualified from driving.
“You were given that indication by a crown court judge but you chose for reasons best known to yourself to immediately leave the court building and get into your car and drive the not inconsiderable distance to your home address.
“It’s difficult to image a more flagrant breach of a court order.
“This is an offence which is so serious that only a custodial sentence is appropriate.”
His lawyer had earlier successfully pleaded for sentence to be postponed until he sits first-year exams at Manchester Metropolitan University.
Shaikh, originally of Bradford and with no previous convictions, will be sentenced on June 14.
