MANCHESTER UNITED’S troubles reportedly hit a new low when TWO scouts unknowingly turned up to watch the same player – and gave two very different reports.
According to the Star, the Old Trafford club managed to send two spies to cast their watchful eyes over a potential transfer target.
The report claims the two individuals did not know each other so were unaware they were both at the stadium to watch the same player in action and let United know what they thought.
And the farce took an ironic twist when the pair filed their reports.
One told the club that the player in question was someone they should consider signing.
But the other said he simply was not good enough to play for Manchester United.
United are understood to have more than sixty scouts operating across the globe – far more than the trusted few Sir Alex Ferguson had – and it seems organising them all is proving difficult.
United are looking to appoint a technical director and will be hopeful that individual will be able to oversee the scouts and transfers with greater success.
Mike Phelan is the the leading candidate to take on the role.
Although he is still keen to have involvement with the first team, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s assistant is in talks to take on the extra responsibility of helping rebuild the club.
He already has experience in a similar role – Phelan spoke last month about his desire to carry on as sporting director at Australian side Central Coast Mariners.
But if he is handed the new position at Manchester United, it may prove difficult to continue to split his time and workload.
Phelan was a loyal assistant to Ferguson but was let go by David Moyes when the former Everton boss took over at United.
Solskjaer, though, brought him back in as his assistant when he replaced Jose Mourinho – initially on an interim basis – in December.
