DEC Donnelly has admitted that he sought therapy after his best friend’s drink-drive crash last year.
Ant McPartlin was twice over the legal limit when he crashed into two cars in south-west London last March.
After the smash, Ant stepped away from the spotlight and went to rehab.
But the fall-out was also distressing for Dec who ended up in therapy to process the scandal.
“I’m not too proud to say I sought help when Ant was away and throughout Ant going away,” he told the Guardian’s Weekend magazine.
“It’s the most destabilising thing that has ever happened to me.”
The Geordie duo have worked together for 30 years but considered splitting up after Ant’s “indefensible” conviction for drink driving.
Dec was furious with his friend when he found out.
“I wanted to punch him and I wanted to hug him at the same time,” he said.
And they even considered ending their partnership as Dec admitted: “I’d be lying if I said the thought hadn’t crossed my mind. I thought about every eventuality and every permutation.”
“Ultimately, the number one thing I wanted to happen was that Ant came back and he was healthy and happy, and we got our relationship back on
track and we carried on.
“That’s the thing that makes me the happiest, working together.”
