IT’S time for the younger generation to move aside as the World Seniors Matchplay Darts returns TODAY!
Leonard Gates claimed his third consecutive World Seniors event by beating Scottish star Jim McEwan 9-6 in last year’s thrilling final.
Phil Taylor has withdrawn from the World Seniors[/caption]And the American ace will be determined to retain his title in front of what is expected to be a packed York Barbican venue.
Two-time back-to-back champion Robert Thornton is on a revenge mission to reclaim the crown he last won in 2022.
While the likes of Glen Durrant, Billy Lovell, Chris Mason, Trina Gulliver and Neil Duff will also have their eyes set on some senior silverware.
However, fans have been left distraught as legendary darts sensation Phil Taylor has been forced to withdraw due on medical advice.
The top 16 players above the age of 40 automatically qualify for the World Seniors.
Similar to the World Matchplay tournaments organised by the Professional Darts Corporation, the Matchplay used the leg format, and the winner needing to be two legs clear at the winning post, with a game being extended if necessary for a maximum of six extra legs before a tie-break leg is required.
An example being, in a first to 8 legs first round match, if the score reaches 10–10 then the 21st leg will be the decider.
The first round and the quarter-finals were the best of 15 legs (or first to 8 legs), and the semi-finals and final were the best of 17 legs (or first to 9).
