Even though Ange Postecoglou’s detractors continue to get louder, the Australian insists he sees many positive signs with the side and remains confident that Spurs can turn things around.
Those sympathetic to Postecoglou will point out that Tottenham deserved three points against Saturday and were unlucky that the ball would not go into the net and to be on the receiving end of some poor refereeing decisions.
Those who are sceptical of the Australian will point out that the side was simply too open at the back once again and too easy to score against.
However, what is undeniable is the fact that the injuries and suspensions are having a severe impact on the side at the moment, with Postecoglou not being able to field anything resembling his strongest side for nearly two months.
Even though Tottenham’s results continue to go from bad to worse, Postecoglou confessed that he was extremely proud of the performance that his players delivered.
He reserved special praise for teenage duo, Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray, and insisted that his side did enough to walk away with three points.
When asked if he is confident after Spurs’ latest display that they can turn things around, the 59-year-old told Football.London: “I have never lacked confidence. I get that the results aren’t there and I get that whether people want to accept the situation we are in.
“You saw the performance of Archie, you saw Lucas today he was unbelievable as an 18-year-old to play in that position. I just see so much to be positive about but we need to win games of football and usually when you play well, you do most things right you get the rewards. Unfortunately, we were denied.”
It is important not to lose sight of the fact that Spurs came up against a Magpies side who were absolutely flying and extremely high on confidence.
The home side certainly did enough to at least come away with a point, especially given the fact that a number of their players were not 100 per cent due to the bug that went through the camp last week.
However, football is a results business and Postecoglou is now on extremely thin ice. A comprehensive defeat against Liverpool on Wednesday would likely put serious question marks over his future at the club.
