Tottenham Hotspur’s squad is ravaged by injuries. The January transfer window provides an opportunity for the club to support Ange Postecoglou and the team for the remainder of the season.
Tottenham’s squad has been decimated by a litany of long-term injuries. Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero and Ben Davies are still looking at around 4 weeks on the sidelines. Destiny Udogie and Guglielmo Vicario are set to remain as longer-term absentees.
This makes goalkeeper, left-back and centre-back positions that urgently need reinforcing in January. An additional attacker has also been deemed a requirement.
However, more than additional bodies, Spurs need players who will actively contribute on their arrival and remain in line with the club’s transfer ideology. Tottenham’s needs are specific but must be met with important games in the Carabao Cup, Europa League and Premier League on the horizon.
Ange Postecoglou wants the January transfer window to be ‘positive’. When asked whether he wants the window to be busy, he said (FootballLondon): “No, I just want it to be a positive one.
“That’s the main thing, it’s not about being busy, like I said, it’s about being positive because, you know, the reality is, like I said, the situation we’re in at the moment is temporary, we’ll get players back and god willing, with a bit of luck, we’ll keep them back and do the right things and we’ll be strong from then on.
“So we just need it to be a positive window where like I said, that’s where we’ve got to be disciplined and make sure the ones we can bring in, if they do come in, they’re going to fit in with our playing style, but also culturally and are coming here for the right reasons, I still think that’s important.”
The transfer window is often a miasma of agents finding moves for their clients exacerbated by speculative rumours. There will be prominent players from top European clubs looking for pastures new, but Tottenham require specific profiles for their squad.
Every new incoming must have a technical proficiency that makes Postecoglou’s possession style football feasible. Additionally, with the physically demanding football Spurs play, any player must be fully committed to the idea of playing for Tottenham.
As Spurs’ squad depth has been drastically reduced, the commitment of players like Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski who never seem to stop running, has been apparent.
Even if players return from injury, any newcomers will be expected to give their all regularly, so Tottenham can continue to compete across multiple competitions.
Tottenham’s season depends on the contribution of these potential new players so there is little room for error from the scouting department. Spurs cannot afford technical or mental concessions from anyone in their pursuit of success.
