Fabrizio Romano reveals that Tottenham might have to be patient in their rumoured pursuit of an AC Milan star after a big development at the Serie A side.
Centre-backs need to be fast to play in Ange Postecoglou‘s system, given how high the Australian asks his backline to defend.
While Tottenham have often relied on Micky van de Ven to bail them out, the Dutchman’s injury record has meant that he cannot be relied upon and has necessitated the need for the Lilywhites to enter the market for another centre-back who has a decent amount of pace.
According to reports, the one man they have identified is Fikayo Tomori, who has struggled to get starts under his belt at Milan this season.
It was reported earlier this week that the Chelsea academy graduate is keen to leave the Rossoneri in search of regular game time as he wants to win back a place in the England squad under Thomas Tuchel.
However, Romano has now pointed out that Milan have just made a managerial change and that their new boss, Sergio Conceicao is yet to make a decision on the future of the 27-year-old.
When asked about Tottenham’s pursuit of Tomori, the journalist told GiveMeSport: “No news on this so far. Tomori’s future depends on Sergio Conceicao now, as he was not a key player under former manager Paulo Fonseca. Let’s see what Milan decide to do now with their new manager.”
Irrespective of whether Conceicao rates the centre-back highly or not, one would think that Milan would be tempted to cash in if Spurs make a sizable offer for the Englishman.
The former Chelsea man’s pace and his versatility make him a good fit for Ange Postecoglou’s side as not only is Tomori equally adept at playing on the left or the right side of central defence, but he can also fill in at right-back if required.
