Tottenham may be faced with a transfer decision over how to handle 21-year-old, Alejo Veliz after a second unsuccessful European loan.
Since joining Tottenham from Rosario Central in 2023, Alejo Veliz has only managed to accumulate 45 mins of senior football at Spurs.
Arriving as a 19-year-old meant that a period of adjustment would have been part of some reasonable expectations set for Veliz.
However, it was decided that Veliz’s development would be better served in Spain where he would have more opportunities and not be limited with a language barrier.
A loan to Sevilla where he was barely used was then followed by a loan to Espanyol. Veliz started the season featuring in several games and even scoring a goal.
However, he has since fallen out of favour and has not started a La Liga game since the end of November.
Speaking to Tottenham News, John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose believes Veliz’s loan is soon to be terminated and a transfer announcement could be made this week.
Wenham said: “I expect that Véliz will be sent back from his loan. I think that might be announced within a couple of days. At that point, Tottenham will really need to decide what they want to do with him.
“He’s probably better suited heading out on another loan, ideally in English football. This is another loan which hasn’t been a great success after his time with Sevilla last year.”
Alejo Veliz was a gamble worth taking for Tottenham. He scored 17 goals across two seasons in Argentina’s Liga Profesional as a teenager. Similar to other Spurs youth signings, he already displays the physicality of a player beyond his years.
The fact he has not yet settled is not too much of a concern. His first season was disrupted by injury in addition to the emergence of Will Lankshear in the academy.
At 21, he still has plenty of time to develop, but with the arrival of Dominic Solanke as well as Richarlison and Lankshear ahead of him, his next loan needs to be a positive one if there is to be any hope of him eventually playing for Tottenham again.
