Jamie Carragher has made an interesting claim about the Carabao Cup and Tottenham ahead of the Lilywhites’ upcoming semifinal showdown against Liverpool.
With a top-four finish looking beyond reach for Tottenham, the Carabao Cup semifinal clashes against Liverpool have now taken huge significance for the club.
Spurs host Liverpool at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the first leg on Wednesday, 8 January, before making the trip to Anfield on Thursday, 6 February.
Some outlets have even claimed over recent days that the results of those two games will be crucial to Ange Postecoglou‘s future at N17, with the Australian running the risk of losing his job if Tottenham do not make the Wembley final.
Looking at the semifinal lineup, Liverpool are undoubtedly the favourites to win the competition, followed by Arsenal, while Spurs seem the least likely to win, given their form over recent months.
However, Carragher confessed that if the Reds do not get their hands on the trophy, he wants one of Spurs and Newcastle to do so, admitting that he would prefer to see silverware being shared around.
The pundit wrote in The Telegraph: “And if Liverpool do not win the Carabao Cup, hopefully Newcastle or Tottenham will. We need new names on the domestic cups in 2025 and beyond.”
If Tottenham had been drawn against Newcastle in the semifinals, there would have been much more reason for optimism as one would not put in beyond Postecoglou‘s men to get past the Magpies and beat either Liverpool or Arsenal in a one-off game.
However, overcoming Arne Slot’s men over 180 minutes of football will be extremely challenging, especially given the fact that Spurs tend to concede goals out of nowhere.
The fact that the second leg is at Anfield gives the Lilywhites a huge mountain to climb to get to Wembley.
