In a season already defined by adversity, Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou has explained why Radu Dragusin was thrust into the starting line-up, despite the centre-back nursing a knock to his ankle.
Tottenham Hotspur’s clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers was always going to be a challenging fixture, but the narrative was overshadowed by a crippling injury crisis that had already decimated the team’s defensive options.
Heading into the match, the squad was without Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, and Ben Davies – all sidelined through various injuries – while Radu Dragusin was also a doubt after sustaining a knock during Spurs’ narrow 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest just days earlier.
For a team reliant on its defensive solidity during key moments this season, the situation presented a daunting task for Postecoglou.
Spurs fans, expecting yet another reshuffled line-up, were shocked to see Dragusin named in the starting eleven. The Romanian centre-back, though not fully fit, was tasked with playing the full ninety minutes.
In his post-match comments, Ange Postecoglou provided insight into the decision to start Radu Dragusin despite his less-than-ideal physical condition.
Speaking candidly, the Australian manager laid bare the difficulties Tottenham are facing as the squad continues to struggle with fitness issues.
He told football.london: “Well we had no choice, if Radu doesn’t play, I don’t know who plays. He wasn’t 100%, but he felt he could get through with his ankle and again, I think the players are all giving everything they can at the moment.
“It’s just unfortunately we can’t give them what they really need and that is some recovery and rest because we’ve got so many players out, but Radu wanted to play today and you know while he wasn’t 100%, we had no choice to put him out there.
“There’s no choice, but it’s not a risk. I mean it’s it’s a judgment call, you know. It’s not like it’s a muscle injury, it’s a knock on his ankle, but yeah, we’re making decisions.
“We’ve got no choice unless I throw another 18 or 17-year-old out there, well, that’s the only fit players we have at the moment.”
While Postecoglou’s decision to field Radu Dragusin can be seen as a necessary gamble, it raises important questions about the long-term implications for both the player and the team.
I know the manager has said that he should be fine, but recent occurrences have shown that players in the team who recover from injuries are more susceptible to picking another injury.
Regardless, the Romanian defender deserves immense credit for his grit and determination; stepping onto the pitch when far from his best, Dragusin showed a level of commitment that fans and teammates alike will not forget.
However, such resilience may with its risks, as it could lead to a more severe problem if not managed carefully.
