Rodrigo Bentancur has earned himself a one-match suspension after collecting a yellow card in Tottenham’s draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Groundhog Day continues for Tottenham Hotspur. Ange Postecoglou fielded a mostly unchanged line-up against Wolves with Pedro Porro replacing the suspended Djed Spence.
Spurs pressed and harried during the first half, but once the second half began, energy dipped and Wolves gained a foothold in the match.
Despite making a triple substitution on the 64th minute, the fatigue running through the squad is unavoidable. Spurs needed more fresh players to maintain momentum, but simply did not have enough available.
Unfortunately for Spurs, they look set to face more absences in their next game.
After serving a seven-match ban, Rodrigo Bentancur would have been hoping to get his season back on track.
Despite a first-half goal from a Spurs corner, Bentancur was cautioned for a tackle on Joao Gomes late in the second half against Wolves.
The yellow card is Bentancur’s fifth of the season before the mid-season break. Alasdair Gold on X has confirmed that this now means Bentancur has earned himself a one-match suspension.
Bentancur will now miss the first match of the new year against Newcastle, once again leaving Tottenham with reduced options in their injury-stricken squad.
Rodrigo Bentancur’s yellow cards were mostly accumulated at the start of the season, so it is unfair to overly criticise his yellow card against Wolves.
However, another absence is the last thing Tottenham need when they are waiting for players to return from injury. Spurs need their senior players to contribute more to rise above the challenges they are facing.
Lucas Bergvall will likely be given minutes to assist Yves Bissouma, but it will not help Bentancur find the rhythm he is lacking after missing so much football already this season.
