Former Tottenham scout Bryan King believes that Heung-min Son’s recent performances are a sign that the Spurs captain is unhappy with the North London club’s recent decision.
Son has failed to live up to the high standards he has set for himself this season, with the Tottenham man looking pedestrian in many games. That has led to a conversation among some Spurs fans about whether the South Korean is now past his best.
This decline in his performances is happening in the backdrop of the player entering the final six months of his contract, although Tottenham are expected to activate the one-year extension option to take the deal to 2026.
There have been some murmurs that Son’s camp are surprised that Spurs have not yet offered a long-term deal to their captain, especially since all parties seemed aligned in the initial round of talks.
King is of the opinion that Spurs have not treated the 32-year-old with the respect he deserves, given the decade of loyal service he has given to the club.
The former Tottenham scout suggested that the forward would feel aggrieved at the development and is thus not as motivated to give his best as he previously was.
When asked about Son’s contract situation, King told Tottenham News: “This should have been sorted out three or four months ago. It is ridiculous. This is a player of quality who has given his football career to Tottenham. Since he joined the football club, up until the present day, there couldn’t have been a better servant.
“Watching the way he has played recently, I question whether 100 per cent of his heart is still at Tottenham because I’d certainly feel aggrieved if I were him. I’m not sure whether Son is happy at the moment. How many years has he been at the football club? And he’s been a star virtually from day one.”
Son may feel a little aggrieved that Tottenham have decided to pause the contract talks for the time being.
However, his agent’s recent comments on the matter suggest that the two parties are very much in communication with one another and that the forward’s entourage expect an offer to arrive sooner rather than later.
Son is not the kind of character to not give 100 per cent for the club and his body language certainly shows that he still very much cares about doing everything in his power to ensure that the club have a successful season.
